Daily practice is crucial for success in speech production, therefore, students are given assignments to practice or complete at home on a daily basis. Students who practice their speech skills at least 4 days a week improve significantly more than those who do not.
Research has shown that doing practice and homework outside of the speech room helps children progress much more quickly as well as helps them to generalize their new skills to natural settings.
Parent participation with your child in making sure home helps are done is vital to your child’s successful remediation. Short, consistent daily practice is best. I strongly encourage you to work with your child at least 5 minutes per day.
About practice worksheets: It is important to produce a high number of correct repetitions in each practice session. This does not mean that the student needs to practice every word containing the target sound or even a large number of different words. Most students do not need more than 15-20 sample words (exemplars) in order to practice accurate productions. The goal is to practice the target sound and learn what the sound feels like and sounds like. Some children and parents become bored with using the same word lists for extended periods. In this case, a website containing word lists may be helpful.
